A. Mentoring of Research Trainees within Diabetes Epidemiology and Clinical Research Section (DECRS)
Mentoring of post baccalaureate intramural research trainees (Postbac IRTA), research nursing staff, postdoctoral fellows, and summer students within the NIDDK DECRS has been an important part of my activity. I have worked with several IRTAs within DECRS on different research projects. Each project has involved a small working group who meet periodically to formulate a study question, develop a data analysis plan, prepare abstracts and manuscripts for publication. I have directly mentored the
following IRTA’s, students, and staff within DECRS on their research projects in the past 5-years.

Project
Projects & Accomplishments of DECRS Mentees:
Kevin Wheelock (IRTA): I worked closely with Kevin on two pediatric research projects, both studies were presented at national meetings and published in peer reviewed journals.
• Wheelock KM, Sinha M, Knowler WC, Nelson RG, Fufaa GD, Hanson RL. Metabolic Risk Factors and Type 2 Diabetes Incidence in American Indian Children. J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 2016 Apr;101(4):1437-44
• Wheelock KM, Fufaa GD, Nelson RG, Hanson RL Knowler WC, Sinha M. Cardiometabolic Risk Profile Based on Body Mass Index in American Indian Children. Pediatr Obes. 2017 Aug;12(4):295-303
Pavithra Vijayakumar (IRTA): I mentored Ms. Vijayakumar on two pediatric studies as senior author using data from the Gila River Indian Community (GRIC) study cohort, we examined secular trends in pediatric obesity over 4-decades in a southwestern American Indian population. In another important study, we used clinical and laboratory data from our longitudinal GRIC study and examined glycemic measures such as HbA1c fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and 2-hour plasma glucose (2hPG) done at baseline during childhood, to predict future incident diabetes.

Elena J. Clark (IRTA): I mentored Elena on a study that explored the relationship between maternal and paternal body size and offspring body size in a cohort of American Indian nuclear families. We analyzed the relationship at different age groups that reflect the various developmental stages of the offspring, at birth, preadolescence, early and late adolescence, and young adulthood. We found that maternal and paternal body size was correlated with that of their offspring across all age groups including birth.

Sanil P. Reddy: In this study, I mentored Sanil in examining the cardiometabolic risk gradient with increasing severity of obesity in two pediatric age cohorts: 5-<10 years and 10-<18 years. Several clinical and biochemical parameters were assessed including blood pressure, fasting glucose, 2-hour glucose, HbA1c, triglycerides, and HDL cholesterol. In both age cohorts, the metabolic profile worsened with increasing severity of obesity. He also published a survey under my mentorship on provider preference nationwide on pediatric growth charts in children with obesity.

Stephany K. Tanamas, PhD. (Postdoc fellow) I was a senior author on Dr. Tanamas’s study examining early onset diabetes risk with increasing severity of obesity.

• Wills A, Khetarpal S, Dobbs M, Knowler WC, Sinha M. Relationship between Obesity, Cognitive Function, and Quality of Life Among Inner-City Minority Youth. Presented at the American Academy of Pediatrics, National Conference and Exhibition (virtual), October 2020.
Laura Vazquez (IRTA): I am currently mentoring Laura on a study that examines role of glycated hemoglobin and other glycemic tests performed during childhood, in predicting future diabetes related micro vasculopathies.
• Vazquez L, Arreola EV, Hanson RL, Sinha M. Measures in Childhood as Predictors of Future Diabetes-Related Microvascular Complications, has been selected for an oral abstract presentation at the American Diabetes Association’s 83rd Scientific Sessions, June 23-26, 2023 in San Diego, California.
