Steven Gabbe, MD
Dr. Gabbe is Emeritus Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ohio State University (OSU) Wexner Medical Center and Emeritus Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology. As CEO, he led the Medical Center to its first ranking on the U.S. News & World Report “Best Hospitals” Honor Roll, and he directed OSU’s largest construction project, a $1.1-billion expansion, including the new James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute and Critical Care Center.
Dr. Gabbe completed his undergraduate degree magna cum laude at Princeton University, his medical degree with Alpha Omega Alpha honors at Weill Cornell Medical College, and a residency in obstetrics and gynecology and clinical and research fellowships at Harvard’s Boston Hospital for Women. He has been a member of the faculty of six universities: University of Southern California, University of Colorado, University of Pennsylvania, and a department chair at Ohio State and the University of Washington for a total of 14 years.
Dr. Gabbe was dean of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine for seven years. He is a leading expert on the complications of diabetes and pregnancy and burnout in academic medicine and is a member of the National Academy of Medicine. Dr. Gabbe has served as senior editor of Obstetrics: Normal and Problem Pregnancies, the leading obstetrics textbook, now in its 8th edition.
Dr. Gabbe is married to Patricia T. Gabbe, MD, MPH. The couple have four children and three grandchildren.
