This presentation will give an overview of how law enforcement in Virginia is trained to handle mental health calls, what Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training looks like, and the de-escalation tactics responders receive in that training, what the ECO process looks like from an officer perspective, and alternatives being built within the system. This training will provide an opportunity to ask questions about law enforcement and about CIT and provide more understanding on how to work with law enforcement.

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain an overview understanding of police training and CIT in Virginia.
  • Learn about the de-escalation/active listening skills responders are taught.
  • Learn the ECO process from an officer perspective, as well as the current alternative transfer of custody programs/response models.
