Michael D. Shapiro is the Fred M. Parrish Professor of Cardiology and Molecular Medicine at Wake Forest University, where he serves on the faculty in the Section of Cardiovascular Medicine. After completing his cardiology fellowship, Dr. Shapiro pursued two additional years of advanced clinical and research training in cardiovascular imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital. Since then, his career has been devoted to the study of lipids, atherosclerosis, and the prevention of cardiovascular disease. He currently serves as the Director of the Center for Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease at Wake Forest University School of Medicine and as Co-Director of the NIH T32 Fellowship Program in Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention.

Dr. Shapiro has received research funding from the NIH, the American Heart Association, and several foundations. His research spans translational science, cardiovascular epidemiology, and clinical trials of innovative lipid-modulating therapies. He has made significant contributions to the understanding of lipids, subclinical atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular disease prevention, with an extensive portfolio of publications in these areas. His pioneering work on PCSK9 physiology and related therapeutic interventions has established him as a leader in the field.

In addition to his research, Dr. Shapiro holds numerous leadership roles in large international clinical trials and professional societies. He currently serves as President of the American Society for Preventive Cardiology and is Chair-elect of the AHA Council on Lipidology, Lipoprotein, Metabolism, & Thrombosis. Alongside his clinical and research activities, Dr. Shapiro is highly regarded for his commitment to mentorship. He has played a pivotal role in guiding the careers of cardiology fellows, medical residents, and students, many of whom have gone on to achieve significant academic and clinical success.
