Michael S. Ruma, MD, MPH
Maternal-Fetal Medicine
President, physician partner
As a board-certified maternal-fetal medicine sub-specialist, Dr. Ruma’s top priority is caring for patients with a high-risk pregnancy. Helping women overcome medical, surgical or obstetrical problems with optimal care during their pregnancy is a great joy for him.
A native of Omaha, NE, he received his MD from Creighton University School of Medicine and stayed at Creighton to complete his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Ruma joined Perinatal Associates of New Mexico (PANM) in 2008 after completing his fellowship training in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the University of North Carolina. He also received a Master of Public Health degree in Health Policy and Administration from the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina. Education is a vital aspect of medicine and research in our field is constantly changing. Dr. Ruma routinely attends medical and ultrasound conferences to provide the most current, advanced care for his patients. He has received numerous awards for excellence in teaching and research. He presents regularly at national and international conferences on a number of topics and is the author of peer-reviewed manuscripts on maternal red blood cell sensitization, the effects of periodontal disease on pregnancy, efficiency in obstetric ultrasound performance, preterm labor standardization and the harmful effect of prior authorization on medical practice. He also enjoys mentoring local students interested in pursuing medicine and obstetrics.
Leadership is a key component of any business and the success of any medical practice. Dr. Ruma was fundamental in the outreach efforts and growth of PANM. By developing relationships in multiple rural communities, Dr. Ruma opened several satellite perinatal ultrasound offices which work in a hub-and-spoke business model with the centralized tertiary level maternal-fetal medicine hub office in the state’s most populated city, Albuquerque. Becoming a physician partner in 2010 and president of PANM in 2019, Dr. Ruma has overseen the practice grow from 30 to 130 staff, 3 to 12 office locations and 3000 to 8500 patients cared for annually. He was also instrumental in the practice’s adoption of telemedicine which has allowed for greater access to genetic counseling, diabetes management and mental health for pregnant patients throughout New Mexico.
Outside of work, Dr. Ruma loves to exercise, hike the trails in the beautiful state of New Mexico, and spend time with his wife traveling the globe.
