Amit Mahajan, MD, FCCP, DAABIP
Dr. Amit “Bobby” Mahajan is the medical director of interventional pulmonology for the Inova
Health System and the Complex Airways and Pleural Disease program at the Inova Fairfax Medical
Center. He is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, critical care medicine, and
interventional pulmonology. Dr. Mahajan serves on the board of directors for the American Association
of Bronchoscopy and Interventional Pulmonology (AABIP) and the American Association of Respiratory
Care (AARC). He is also a national volunteer spokesman for the American Lung Association (ALA). Dr.
Mahajan completed his undergraduate degree in English at Williams College in Williamstown,
Massachusetts, medical school at the University of Toledo School of Medicine, and his internal medicine
residency, chief residency, and pulmonary and critical care fellowship at the University of Chicago. Dr.
Mahajan completed his interventional pulmonology fellowship at the Harvard University Hospital
System in The Massachusetts General Hospital and The Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He has
received multiple awards including induction to the Alpha Omega Alpha Society and the Gold Humanism
Honor Society. In 2022, he was awarded the White House Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in
interventional pulmonology and his contributions to the COVID-19 pandemic response.
Dr. Mahajan performs both diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for malignant and benign
diseases of the chest. He has a focus on rigid bronchoscopy for endobronchial tumors, endobronchial
ultrasound bronchoscopy (EBUS), electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy (ENB), and bronchoscopic
lung volume reduction (BLVR). He also performs various other procedures in the airway along with
various pleural procedures. He has a significant interest in research and participates in both investigator
and industry sponsored studies. He oversees the Inova Saville incidental lung nodule program and the
Inova Saville lung cancer screening program. He is extensively published in the field of interventional
pulmonology and sits on multiple advisory boards.
Dr. Mahajan is a native of Toledo, Ohio and currently resides in Vienna, VA with his wife and
three children. He enjoys playing basketball and watching movies with his family
