Bio
Dr. Metwalli joined the Department of Urology at Jefferson after serving for nearly 5 years as a Professor and Chief of Urology at Howard University Hospital (HUH). At Howard University Hospital, Dr. Metwalli was the Director of Robotic Surgery and was the leader in bringing robotic surgery to HUH where he performed the first robotic surgery in that hospital’s history. Dr. Metwalli was also the Director of Urologic Oncology for the Howard University Cancer Center (HUCM) and in this role successfully applied for a Department of Defense Grant investigating the genomics of papillary kidney cancer in patients of African descent. He was also a co-investigator on a successful collaborative R01 NIH grant investigating polygenic risk scoring in men of African descent with prostate cancer.
Prior to his nearly 5 years at Howard, Dr. Metwalli was the primary kidney surgeon at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) for over 7 years. During that time, he restructured the urologic oncology fellowship educational curriculum and participated in the training of over 20 urologic oncology fellows. He was also involved in the training of urology residents rotating at the NCI from Georgetown University Hospital, George Washington University Hospital, and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Dr. Metwalli oversaw the conversion of surgical management for multifocal and hereditary kidney cancer from primarily open surgery to robotic surgery. In addition, Dr. Metwalli founded a collaboration between the NCI and the Congressional Prostate Disease Research within Walter Reed National Military Medical Center that resulted in multiple peer reviewed publications on prostate cancer management. Dr. Metwalli has published over 70 research manuscripts and over 15 book chapters. He has served as President and on the Board of Directors for the GenitoUrinary MultiDisciplinary Regional Oncology Project (GUMDROP) which was a collaborative effort to support clinical trials completion among urology investigators from the Washington DC and Baltimore areas. Dr. Metwalli also served on the Medical Advisory Board of the National Kidney Foundation of Maryland and the Cancer Liaison Physician to the American College of Surgeons for St. Agnes Hospital, in Baltimore, MD.
