Daniel Kim, MD, MBA
Dr. Kim graduated top of his class from Amherst College with degrees in neuroscience and music while becoming a four-time All-American tennis athlete and winning the NCAA men’s tennis championship. He graduated with his M.D. and M.B.A., with honors, from Harvard Medical School and Harvard Business School, respectively. He was awarded the Michael E. Porter Leadership Award upon graduation and was invited to serve as Senior Advisor to then-Mayor Marty Walsh, shaping economic and healthcare policy for the city of Boston and Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Dr. Kim completed his internal medicine internship at Harvard Medical School’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital where he was recognized for his clinical excellence. He completed his residency at the Harvard Radiation Oncology Program which included training at Massachusetts General Hospital, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Boston Children’s Hospital. He was elected Chief Resident by the Harvard Medical School faculty and his peers at the Harvard Radiation Oncology Program, helping lead clinical and educational directives for the largest radiation oncology residency in the country.
Dr. Kim is trained in all aspects of radiation oncology with experience in advanced radiation therapy modalities including proton radiotherapy, stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SBRT/SABR), intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), MRI-linear accelerator radiotherapy, adaptive radiotherapy, high-dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy, low-dose rate (LDR) brachytherapy, intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT), and radioisotope/radiopharmaceutical therapy. He treats patients with all types of cancers and his clinical interests include providing high-level multidisciplinary treatment for genitourinary cancers (prostate, bladder, testicular, kidney, penile, and other urologic cancers), CNS (brain and spine) benign and malignant tumors, and gastrointestinal cancers. He is one of the only physicians in the mid-Atlantic region who offers all modalities for prostate cancer treatment in his practice – proton radiotherapy, HDR brachytherapy, LDR brachytherapy, SBRT/SABR on the Cyberknife and linear accelerator, IMRT/VMAT, MRI-guided radiotherapy, radioisotope/radiopharmaceutical therapy, spacer gel placement, and fiducial marker placement. He is also one of a few physicians with extensive knowledge and training in proton SBRT/SABR for various tumor types throughout the body as well as proton radiosurgery and brachytherapy for brain tumors.
Dr. Kim’s academic interests have been in translational science through developing novel biomarkers by analysis of annotated datasets and preclinical studies that inform clinical trial design. He has developed and helped activate phase I and II clinical trials. Dr. Kim has received grant funding through the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), Department of Defense, and Harvard Medical School. He also has research interests in improving tumor control probability while decreasing normal tissue effects using proton radiotherapy. He is widely published and has authored over 40 peer-reviewed research manuscripts in journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine and Clinical Cancer Research. Dr. Kim is editor and author of the 1st edition textbook Translational Radiation Oncology (ISBN: 9780323884235) as well as authoring multiple book chapters. He has been invited to present his award-winning research at national and international meetings, including AACR, American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), and American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO). Dr. Kim serves as an invited reviewer for several journals including Cancer, Journal of Clinical Oncology – Precision Oncology, International Journal of Radiation Oncology – Biology – Physics, Journal of Urology, Journal of Neurosurgery, Journal of Gastrointestinal Oncology, and Radiotherapy and Oncology. Dr. Kim continues to be actively involved in teaching medical students and residents through clinical training and research. He remains an active member of the ASCO, ASTRO and AACR.
Dr. Kim is board certified in radiation oncology. He sees patients at the Inova Schar Cancer Institute. Outside of the clinic, Dr. Kim enjoys playing sports and spending time with his wife and children.
