Thomas Wise
Thomas Wise MD is currently Chairman Emeritus of the Department of Psychiatry at Inova Fairfax Hospital. He holds faculty appointments as Professor of Psychiatry (Part Time) at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and is Professor of Medicine at George Washington University School of Medicine. He is also Professor of Medical Education at the Inova Campus of the University of Virginia. Dr. Wise has been President of the American Psychosomatic Society;The Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry; the International College of Psychosomatic Medicine and the American Association of General Hospital Psychiatrists. He is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and Fellow of the American College of Psychiatrists and American College of Physicians. He was editor in chief of the journal Psychosomatics and series editor of Advances in Psychosomatic Medicine. He has been on editorial boards of numerous medical journals. He has received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Psychiatric Association and the Thomas Hackett Award from the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry. He has published over 350 medical journal articles (peer reviewed) and book chapters and edited 8 books. His academic interests include personality issues in the medically ill with a focus upon alexithymia and sexuality in the medically ill.
Dr. Wise was born in Reno Nevada and raised in the District of Columbia. He attended Dartmouth College and Duke University School of Medicine. His postgraduate training was at Boston City Hospital; Georgetown University and SUNY Downstate. He completed a fellowship in Consultation Liaison Psychiatry at SUNY downstate. He is board certified in Adult Psychiatry and was certified in Psychosomatic Medicine before he became Emeritus Chairman. He is married to Karen Dalinsky Wise and has two daughters.
