Mark Parker, MD, FACR
Mark S. Parker, M.D, FACR is a Professor of Diagnostic Radiology and Internal Medicine at VCU Health Systems in Richmond, Virginia; Director of Thoracic Imaging; Director of the Thoracic Imaging Fellowship Program, and Director of the Early Detection Lung Cancer Screening Program at VCU Health Systems. Dr. Parker received his medical school and diagnostic radiology training at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia, and his subspecialty fellowship training in thoracic disease at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. He subsequently headed the Thoracic Imaging Division at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Parker became the Director of Thoracic Imaging at VCU Health Systems in 2009. In 2015, Dr. Parker was inducted as a Fellow in the American College of Radiology (ACR). This is one of the highest honors the ACR can bestow on a member and only 10% of ACR members have been awarded this honor. Dr. Parker is an active member of 8 national medical organizations and societies, and 2 international radiology societies. Dr. Parker has served as a board examiner for the American Board of Radiology (ABR) and as an exam question writer for the American College of Radiology’s annual in-service training examinations. To date, Dr. Parker has given over 700 lectures, more than 75 on the topic of lung cancer and other neoplasms affecting the lungs, pleura, and mediastinum and more recently COVID-19. Dr. Parker has given lectures on early detection lung cancer screening before the World Cancer Conference (WCC) in Philadelphia, and in Rome, Italy. In 2019, Dr. Parker served as both the chair and moderator for and presented a keynote on lung cancer screening at the International Cancer Conference (ICC)in London, England. Dr. Parker has over 50 publications in various peer-reviewed journals, nearly 50 published abstracts-scientific proceedings and nearly 40 scientific poster exhibits. Dr. Parker is the lead author of two core textbooks in thoracic imaging published in English as well as 3 other languages and the lead author on a dedicated lung cancer-screening textbook. In May 2019, Dr. Parker was named Chair of the Scientific Abstract Subcommittee for the American Roentgen Ray Society. In 2023, he was named chair of the Categorical Course Education Committee for the American Roentgen Ray Society and selected to serve as on the board of the Roentgen Fund Trustees. In 2020, Dr. Parker became a member of the ACR National Lung Cancer Screening Steering 2.0 Subcommittee. In 2021, Dr. Parker was a nominee for the VCU Health Systems Irby-James Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching Award. In 2022, Dr. Parker received the Distinguished Clinical Educator Award by the American Roentgen Ray Society, awarded to only one physician each year. In 2022, Dr. Parker also received the Enrique Gerszten, MD Faculty Teaching Excellence Award. This is the highest award given in recognition for teaching by the VCU School of Medicine. He is the only radiologist to have ever received this award by the VCU School of Medicine. To date, Dr. Parker has received a minimum of six excellence in teaching awards by residents and or other multidisciplinary departments.
