Richard S. Irwin, MD, Master FCCP
Richard S. Irwin, MD, Master FCCP is a tenured Professor of Medicine and Professor of Nursing at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School and UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, MA. He retired as Division Chief of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine in 2005 after serving in that role for 26 years. He retired as Editor-in-Chief of CHEST in July of 2019 after serving 14 years during which time the Impact Factor of the Journal rose from 3.118 to 9.657. He also retired as Chair of Critical Care Operations at his Medical Center in October of 2020 after serving in that role for 16 years. Dr. Irwin graduated from Tufts University, received his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine, did his medical residency training at the Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston and pulmonary fellowship training at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital in NYC. As a clinician scientist, Dr. Irwin has authored 629 scholarly works, most notably concerning cough. He was recognized by Expertscape on September 23, 2021 as a World Expert in Cough. Expertscape’s PubMed-based algorithms placed Dr. Irwin in the top 0.013% of scholars writing about Cough over the 10 years from 2011-2021. He has also been the recipient of numerous teaching awards and honors including becoming a Master FCCP, being selected to be consistently listed on an annual basis in the Best Doctors in America from 1998, America's Top Doctors from 2001, and America’s Top Physicians from 2006. In 2020, he was selected by an Ad Hoc CHEST Journal Committee as a Giant in Chest Medicine. An editorial with audiovisual interview commemorated the honor. “Giants in Chest Medicine: Richard S. As an active Fellow since 1979, Dr. Irwin has served the CHEST organization in many leadership roles including being its President from 2003-2004.
