Marilyn B Mets MD
Marilyn Baird Mets, MD was the Lillian Sherman Cowen Reiger and Harold L.S Cowen Reiger Research Professor in Pediatric Ophthalmology at Northwestern University and the Division Head for Ophthalmology at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. She is now an Emeritus Professor of ophthalmology at Northwestern. Dr. Mets did her Ophthalmology residency training at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio and her fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology at the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC, and in Ophthalmic Genetics at John Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland. She is board certified in Ophthalmology and is a Director Emeritus of the American Board of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Mets’ principal clinical and research interest is Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. Areas of special interest include the eye manifestations of congenital infections, hereditary retinal disease, and the genetics of eye disease. Dr. Mets was Editor-in-Chief of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Focal Points Publication (1993-1997), during which she was also an Associate Secretary of the AAO. She was on the Board of Directors of the Toxoplasmosis Research Institute (1991-1998), the Secretary Treasurer of the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) (1998-2001), and on the Board of Directors of Women in Ophthalmology (2000-2year.003) and the Board of Directors of the National Children’s Eye Care Foundation (2002- 2009).
She served as a Director of the American Board of Ophthalmology (2004-2012), President of the Costenbader Society (2004-2008), Vice President of the Children’s Eye Foundation (2006-2009), and on the Council of the American Ophthalmological Society (2006-2010) holding the position of Chair in the last year and president of the society in the following year. She has served on the American Board of Medical Subspecialties (ABMS) as Chair of the Committee on Oversight and Monitoring of Maintenance of Certification (COMMOC) (2006-2012), Chair (2010-2012). She has received a Senior Achievement award from the AAO and an honors award from AAPOS. She has published 110 peer reviewed manuscripts and additional chapters and abstracts.
Dr. Mets and her husband, Laurens, of 52 years have three children, Rebecca, who is also a pediatric ophthalmologist, David who has a PhD in molecular biology and is at the University of California in San Francisco, and Catherine who is a registered nurse with an MPH who works at the American College of Surgeons.. The family has five grandchildren.
