M. Edward Wilson, MD was born in Charleston, South Carolina. He received his undergraduate B.S. degree from Clemson University and his M.D. from Medical University of South Carolina. His Residency in Ophthalmology was completed at the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland followed by a fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus at the Children's Hospital National Medical Center under the direction of Marshall Parks, M.D.

Dr. Wilson is currently the N. Edgar Miles Professor of Ophthalmology and Pediatrics with Tenure at the Albert Florens Storm Eye Institute, Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, S.C. He began his academic career as Assistant Professor at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. He returned to Charleston in 1990 as the Residency Program Director for Storm Eye Institute at M.U.S.C., a position he held for 8 years until becoming Department Chair. He served as Ophthalmology Department Chair at MUSC and Director of the Storm Eye Institute from 1996-2011.

Dr. Wilson remains actively involved in Fellowship training in Pediatric Ophthalmology, having trained fellows continuously since 1991. His research interests include pediatric cataract surgery and childhood strabismus.

He has been elected to several prestigious societies and groups, including the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Medical Honor Society, the Association for Research in Strabismus (the Squint Club), the International Intraocular Implant Club (IIIC) and the American Ophthalmological Society (AOS). He served for 5 years on the AOS Council and subsequently as the AOS President in 2018-2019.

Dr. Wilson has received a Life Achievement Honor Award from both the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, where he is also Past President. He has been awarded the Marshall M. Parks medal from the Children’s Eye Foundation and the Claud Worth Medal from the British Isles Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus Association.

Dr. Wilson served as an Executive Editor of the American Journal of Ophthalmology for more than 10 years and on the editorial Board of the Journal of AAPOS for a full 8 year term. He has written or contributed to 25 books including his textbook on Pediatric Cataract Surgery. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed scientific articles. He has given 700+ invited presentations. He has delivered 22 named lectures, including the Frank Costenbader, Claud Worth, and Marshall Parks lectures.
