Mohamad Jaafar, MD, FACS, FAAP

Dr Mohamad S. Jaafar was born and raised in Beirut, Lebanon, where he received his Bachelor of Science and Medical Doctor degrees from the American University of Beirut and where he also completed his internship and ophthalmology residency. He then pursued Clinical Fellowships in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus at Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, and Texas Children’s Hospital, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX, and a second residency in Ophthalmology at the Washington Hospital Center, Washington, DC.
In 1983, Dr. Jaafar established the Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Service at the King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He moved to Washington, DC, in 1986 and, in 1995, became Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Children’s National Health System. He is currently the Dorothy, Jay, Kara and Mark Weinstein Professor and Chief of Ophthalmology, Professor of Ophthalmology and Pediatrics at the George Washington University, and Past-Director of the Pediatric Ophthalmology Fellowship Program.
Dr Jaafar is a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Pediatrics, and a member of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, the International Strabismological Association, the Washington Academy of Ophthalmology and many other national and international professional societies and associations. He served on the Board of Directors of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus and on the Council of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and is actively serving on the Boards of the Children’s Eye Foundation, the International Strabismological Association, the Prevention of Blindness Society of Metropolitan Washington, the Aid Association for the Blind of the District of Columbia, and the Editorial Board of a number of medical journals.
Dr Jaafar is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and has received the Life Time Achievement Award of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, the Senior Achievement Award of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Professional Achievement Award of the Prevention of Blindness Society of the Washington Metropolitan Area, the Children’s National Sauber Award for Medical Excellence, three Golden Apple Awards for Teacher of the Year and many commendations, medals and recognition awards. He has been consistently listed as Best Pediatric Ophthalmologist in America’s Top Doctors, Washingtonian, Northern Virginia Magazine, America’s Registry of Outstanding Professionals and many others.
Dr Jaafar has published tens of scientific papers and book chapters and has given scores of presentations in national and international meetings on a variety of topics covering, among others, strabismus in adults and children, amblyopia, ocular tumors and pediatric glaucoma and cataract. His opinion is sought in the management of infantile glaucoma and difficult strabismus conditions.
