Why Session Codes Matter

Understanding the Final Step in the CME Approval Process

What Is a Session Code?

A Session Code is a unique identifier assigned to an RSS session after it has successfully completed the CME review and approval process.

The code indicates that:

✅ Faculty disclosures have been collected

✅ Relevant financial relationships have been reviewed

✅ Any required conflict-of-interest mitigation has been completed

✅ The session meets CME accreditation requirements

Why Isn't a Session Code Generated Automatically?

A session cannot receive a code until the Office of CME has reviewed the information submitted through the CME Portal.

This review helps ensure:

  • Educational content remains independent
  • Financial relationships have been evaluated
  • Potential conflicts have been mitigated
  • Accreditation requirements have been met

Think of the Session Code as the final approval stamp for a CME activity.

Why Do Learners Need the Session Code?

The Session Code connects attendees to the correct CME-approved activity.

Without the correct code:

  • Learners will experience difficulty claiming credit
  • Attendance may not be matched correctly
  • Participation records will be delayed

Session Codes help ensure that credit is awarded accurately and efficiently.

What Happens If a Session Doesn't Receive a Code Before the Event?

A missing Session Code is often an indicator that:

  • Faculty disclosures are still pending
  • Additional information is needed
  • CME review is still in progress
  • Required revisions have not yet been completed

If a Session Code has not been issued, coordinators should contact the Office of CME before the session occurs.

Can the Session Code Appear on Promotional Materials?

The Session Code serves as a visible indicator that the activity has been reviewed and approved by the Office of CME.

You can add the code to:

  • Flyers
  • Session slides
  • Announcement emails

How Coordinators Help the Process

Best Practices

✅ Add faculty early

✅ Monitor disclosure completion

✅ Submit sessions for review as soon as all disclosures are complete

✅ Respond promptly to CME requests for revisions

Early submission helps avoid last-minute issues and ensures learners can claim credit without delays.
