Learning Objectives:

  1. Distinguish between acute suicide risk (short-term, high urgency) and chronic suicidality (long-standing, persistent thoughts).
  2. Analyze the function and meaning of chronic suicidal ideation for an individual (e.g., emotional regulation, a sense of control, or an ego-syntonic response to overwhelming distress).
  3. Identify core biopsychosocial and attachment trauma factors that perpetuate long-term suicidal ideation.
