Matthew Laughon, MD, MPH

Dr. Matthew Laughon is a Professor of Pediatrics (Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he also serves as Vice Chair for Academic Affairs in the Department of Pediatrics. He is a neonatologist and clinical investigator with expertise in neonatal clinical pharmacology and early phase trials, with a focus on improving the safety and effectiveness of therapies used in premature and critically ill infants. His research spans multicenter clinical trial leadership, drug development in neonates, and the application of advanced methods—including pharmacometrics and pragmatic trial designs—to generate actionable evidence for neonatal care. He is actively engaged in national research collaborations and has a strong record of scholarly productivity and mentorship of trainees and junior faculty. Dr. Laughon’s work aims to accelerate safe, efficient translation of therapeutics to improve outcomes for the most vulnerable newborns.
