Karen Bodnar, MD, IBCLC, FAAP, FABM
Dr. Bodnar is the Medical Director of Inova Breastfeeding and Lactation Medicine.
After earning a B.S. in Physics from MIT and serving in the Air Force for 5 years, she completed medical school and Pediatrics residency at the University of Florida. She was a practicing community pediatrician and residency faculty member for 5 years in Los Angeles and then rural central California. During that time, she became an Internationally Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and a Fellow of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine.
In 2015, she relocated to Northern Virginia where she practiced as a full-scope pediatric hospitalist for 3 years while working to start Inova’s Breastfeeding and Lactation Medicine Program in 2018. She is currently an Associate Professor for the University of Virginia School of Medicine.
In addition to her clinical work, she co-hosts a free monthly case discussion webinar through the Institute for the Advancement for Breastfeeding and Lactation Education. She serves on the board of directors of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine and was a founder of the North American Board of Breastfeeding and Lactation Medicine. Since 2012, she has been the co-host of a monthly podcast called “Breastfeeding Medicine”. In 2023, she became the clinical mentor for a Breastfeeding Medicine Fellow at Inova in partnership with the University of Rochester.
She is married with 2 teenagers and enjoys pilates, travel and audiobooks.
