NASSIR GHAEMI, Professor of Psychiatry and Pharmacology, Tufts University; Director Mood Disorders Program, Tufts Medical Center

Nassir Ghaemi MD MPH is a psychiatrist and researcher with expertise in depression and bipolar illness. He is Professor of Psychiatry at Tufts University, and Director of the Mood Disorders Program at Tufts Medical Center. He also is Lecturer on Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, and teaches at Cambridge Health Alliance. He also has worked at Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research in early drug discovery (2017-2021), and had other prior faculty appointments (Emory, Georgetown, George Washington).
He has written multiple books, most recently Clinical Psychopharmacology (Oxford University Press, 2019), winner of the Association of American Publishers 2020 PROSE award for excellence in the biological and life sciences, and also the New York Times bestseller, A First-Rate Madness (Penguin, 2011). He has published over 300 scientific articles or book chapters. He is also Associate Editor of Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica, and runs a clinical education website, www.psychiatryletter.com.
His education includes: MD (Medical College of Virginia, 1990), medical internship (Mass. General Hospital, 1990-91) and psychiatry residency training (McLean, 1991-94) in the Harvard system, MA in philosophy (Tufts, 2001), MPH (Harvard, 2004).
He is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and former President of the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society (2024-2025).
