Dr. Shad Deering is the Medical Director of the Inova Center for Advanced Medical Simulation and a specialty care physician board certified in both maternal-fetal medicine and obstetrics and gynecology. He joined Inova in 2024.

After his residency in OB/GYN at Walter Reed Army Medical Center/Bethesda Naval hospital, he went on to do an MFM fellowship at Georgetown University hospital where he created a Division of Medical Simulation and was part of the ER response during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Following fellowship, Dr. Deering served in the US Army in progressive levels of clinical and administrative leadership. During this time, he volunteered for deployment and led the Deployed Combat Casualty Research team in Iraq. He also founded the Central Simulation Committee and became a national leader in medical simulation training and patient safety, focusing on practical implementation. The simulation efforts and organizations he has led have trained more than 600,000 medical providers during his career. His last military assignment was as the Chair of the Department of OB/GYN at the Uniformed Services University. After 26 years on active duty, he retired from the Army and was recruited to the Baylor College of Medicine to work with the educational team and their affiliate, CHRISTUS Health, to create and serve as the Director of the CHRISTUS Simulation Institute.

At the beginning of the pandemic, he was called upon to serve as the COVID-19 Chief Medical Incident Commander for the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. This involved the organization and management of personal protective equipment, patient screening, and clinical care protocols as well as interfacing with regional and system level assets to ensure safety of the entire hospital care team during the pandemic.

After a national search he was then selected to serve in the role of Associate Dean for faculty affairs during a crucial transition in the overall organizational structure between CHRISTUS and BCM. This position was tasked with support and strategic vision planning of approximately 200 physicians and administrators across the spectrum of pediatric specialties and OB/GYN providers and was responsible for faculty recruitment, development, academic promotion, budgetary oversight, and strategic planning/coordination with the CHRISTUS healthcare system. 

In September 2022, Dr. Deering was elected to the Executive Board of the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine. He is also part of a team recently awarded a 3.6-million-dollar NIH R01 grant in collaboration with Baylor College of Medicine and Columbia University to create a simulation training program to improve operative management of postpartum hemorrhage.

Dr. Deering has delivered babies in 10 different states and a combat zone, was awarded the Bronze Star, holds two patents for an obstetric birthing simulator system, has over 100 publications and two TED talks about obstetric simulation and has managed over 30 million dollars in grants and external funding. His simulation videos have over 21 million views on YouTube.
