Andrew Satin, MD

Andrew J. Satin, M.D. (Col USAF retired) is the Dr. Dorothy Edwards Professor and Director (Chair) of Gynecology and Obstetrics, the Obstetrician Gynecologist-in Chief of the Johns Hopkins Hospital and for Johns Hopkins Medicine. He is the immediate past President of American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) serving on the ABOG Board of Directors for 14 years. In the last 12 years as Director (Chair) of Gynecology and Obstetrics, he has led Johns Hopkins Medicine ‘s (JHM) largest commitment and investment in women’s health in its 135-year history. Extramural funding for the Department has grown more than fivefold now exceeding $10M annually. Endowment supporting professorships and research has increased and approaches $50M. The Department supports undergraduate and graduate medical education including 8 subspecialty fellowships. Dr. Satin received his undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago and his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, Maryland. He completed residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center and fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas (Parkland Hospital). Prior to his recruitment to Johns Hopkins, his distinguished 25 –year military career included serving as Chair of the Department of Ob / Gyn at the USUHS and as program director of education programs at Walter Reed AMC and the National Naval Medical Center Bethesda. He has served on a women’s health advisory group to the Secretary of the Veterans Administration. Dr. Satin has disseminated over 200 manuscripts and lectured extensively on topics including labor stimulation and management, medical education, simulation, and patient safety. He is currently the PI of the Johns Hopkins Women’s Reproductive Health Research Career Development Program (WRHR) (NIH-K-12), mPI of the JH NIH Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health Program (BIRCWH) (NIH K-12), MPI on the multi-site consortium Healthy Brain and Child Development (HBCD)study, and the PI/PD on the JHM- Allegheny Health Network- Highmark Health Gynecology, Obstetrics, and Women’s Health Collaborative. Among his leadership roles at Johns Hopkins, he is co-Chair of the Professorial Promotions Committee and a member of the Board of Trustees of Johns Hopkins Community Physicians, and the Board of Governors of the Clinical Practice Association. In addition to his leadership position at ABOG, national leadership roles have included membership on the ACGME Residency Review Committee (RRC), and Chair of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) Practice Bulletins and Clinical Document Review Committees for Obstetrics, and Member of the Board of Directors of the Society for Maternal-fetal Medicine (SMFM). He is married to Gail L. Seiken MD and they are the proud parents of three adult children. His hobbies include playing golf and watching hockey.
