Short Bio:
Dr. Stephan Thilen is a Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine at University of Washington in Seattle. He has a medical degree from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. He did his residency in Anesthesiology at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, NY and was in private practice before returning to academics in 2001. At that time, he did a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine and earned a Master’s degree in Population Health, both at University of Wisconsin in Madison. He has been at University of Washington since 2008.
He has conducted multiple research projects on perioperative management of neuromuscular blockade. His original research reports have been published in the leading journals, including Anesthesiology, the British Journal of Anaesthesia, the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia, and Anesthesia & Analgesia. He was a co-chair of the ASA Task Force on Neuromuscular Blockade that developed the 2023 American Society of Anesthesiologists Practice Guidelines for Monitoring and Antagonism of Neuromuscular Blockade.
