Dr. Sarah Hougen Poggi is an Obstetrician and Gynecologist and Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist at Johns Hopkins-Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, DC.  She has an appointment as an Associate Professor in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

Dr. Poggi is a native of Virginia, from a long line of the same.  After education at West Potomac High School in Fairfax County, she attended Princeton University, receiving her degree in Geology and Geophysics. She then attended the Yale School of Medicine, falling in love with her classmate, now her late husband, Matthew Poggi. She also fell in love with Obstetrics on an away rotation on the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico (she went for the rocks). Following Matthew, and his US Navy commitment to California, she thrived at her residency at the University of California, Los Angeles, in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Always drawn to complicated Obstetrics, she then chose a fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Georgetown University Hospital, as her husband completed his training at Walter Reed. They have two daughers, now graduated-one trading energy in Houston, and the other accepted to Columbia medical school.

Along the way, she pursued various research interests and publications, some including the intersection of the environment, biomineralization and women's health.

She is pleased to be multiyear reviewer for the Virginia Birth Injury Fund, at the the behest of the Virginia Attorney General's office. She even more proud to spend 18 years at Inova Alexandria Hospital, and a year at UVA, caring for pregnant women of our great Commonwealth. 

After all these years, patient care-from wherever the patients hail-never has become routine or a bother.  This is the greatest joy of medicine as a career.
