Carolyn Cannon, MD, PhD
- Associate Professor of Microbial Pathogenesis and Immunology
- Director, MD/PhD Program
- Texas A&M University School of Medicine
Dr. Cannon received her MD and PhD from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, where she was inspired as a medical student to investigate the pathophysiology of cystic fibrosis. She subsequently completed a residency in pediatrics and a fellowship in pediatric pulmonology at Children’s Hospital in Boston. Dr. Cannon pursued post-doctoral training at the Channing Laboratory focusing on the pathogenesis of cystic fibrosis pulmonary infection with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. An epidemic of Burkholderia dolosa among cystic fibrosis patients in Boston sparked her interest in the pathogenesis of infection by members of the Burkholderia cepacia complex, and ultimately, the development of novel antimicrobials to treat these, and other, highly resistant bacterial pathogens. In 2003, Dr. Cannon joined the faculty at Washington University, where she developed an interest in novel nanosystems for targeted delivery of antimicrobials. She returned home to Texas in 2009 to serve as faculty at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, until 2014, when she joined the faculty of her undergraduate alma mater, Texas A&M University, as an Associate Professor of Microbial Pathogenesis and Immunology in the School of Medicine. Dr. Cannon is cross appointed at Baylor College of Medicine and cares for patients with cystic fibrosis and other lung diseases at Texas Children’s Hospital. She continues to pursue her interest in novel approaches to treat infections with resistant bacterial pathogens.
