Karen O'Connell, MD, MEd
I am a board-certified pediatric emergency medicine physician and the Director of Patient Safety and Resuscitation at Children’s National Hospital (CNH) in Washington, DC. My clinical research over the past decade has focused on resuscitation quality improvement, family-centered care, patient safety, and EMS for children. I have national collaborative research experience as an investigator and served as the Site PI for several research studies with the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN). I am also a co-founder and site PI for the Videography in Pediatric Emergency Resuscitation (VIPER) collaborative. I have served nationally on the advisory board for the National EMSC Data Analysis Resource Center (NEDARC) for five years and recently served two three-year terms as an Executive Committee member for the American Academy of Pediatrics, Section on Emergency Medicine. Regionally, I have been appointed the Associate Pediatric Medical Director with the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS) since 2007. I completed my Masters in Education in 2011 with a focus on human and organizational learning from the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and have created numerous resuscitation education curricula for providers of all levels of training, from prehospital to subspecialty level training. Currently, I lead a multidisciplinary critical airway symposium locally and nationally, have authored and lead the pediatric high performance CPR protocol roll-out for Maryland EMS, and educate providers nationally as a PREP EM instructor.
