Christopher Macpherson, MA. Ed
In-House Donation Coordinator II
I am fortunate to have had the experiences I’ve had and my journey in healthcare has allowed me to connect with people from all walks of life, find common values, create lasting change, and save lives. I have always been good with people, listening comes easily, and I have a unique way of seeing challenges from many perspectives. A master's degree in the health sciences and a few years later, I find myself maximizing these skills in the high-stakes arena of organ and tissue donation.
Coordinating organ donation in the heart of Washington D.C. comes with a level of intensity and pressure to succeed that is unique to anywhere else. Accomplishing the incredibly complex task requires tenacity and resilience. Much of my time is spent mitigating challenges in real-time among several groups of people (physicians, administrators, surgeons, operating rooms, families, nurses, and staff from my organization…) with a high degree of interest and investment in the outcome. The remainder of my time is spent developing relationships with key stakeholders, evaluating performance data, and collaborating with hospital partners (from the C-suite to the linen department) needed to run a successful organ donation program.
I see myself as the ambassador for organ donation at MedStar Washington Hospital and Children’s National Hospital. I approach my role with an integrity firs mindset; working diligently to develop trust with hospital partners. Fostering collaboration and synergy between organizations. Ultimately driving a change in the perceptions, emotions, and attitudes that surround organ donation. I care deeply for my patients, I care about families, and I care a lot about the people I work with to accomplish such an important job.
