Dr. Gwen Mitchell, PsyD, serves as the Associate Professor and Co-Director of the International Disaster Psychology: Trauma & Global Mental Health program. With a rich career spanning over two decades in clinical psychology, Dr. Mitchell holds substantial expertise in global mental health and humanitarian aid. Her commitment to humanitarian aid spans over a decade, focusing on post-conflict and low resourced settings. Dr. Mitchell's expertise includes providing expert testimony in crucial areas such as immigration, asylum, post-traumatic stress, child abuse, intergenerational trauma, and stress responses. Engaged deeply in global mental health and humanitarian aid, Dr. Mitchell collaborates with organizations worldwide, ranging from Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Myanmar, and Thailand to Jordan, Grenada, Ethiopia, and Cameroon. Her impact extends through numerous publications and presentations covering vital topics encompassing trauma, vicarious trauma, moral injury, global mental health, and culturally tailored interventions. Her forte lies in conducting forensic evaluations and providing expert testimonies across various legal realms, including immigration and criminal courts. Dr. Mitchell's international contributions include partnerships with renowned organizations such as Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières, The Center for Victims of Torture, United Nations, and Open Society Foundation. Her work spans clinical services, consultation, and training in trauma counseling, mental health, child development, gender-based violence, and victim support services. In her current role, Dr. Mitchell oversees the clinical and academic aspects of the IDP: Trauma & Global Mental Health program. She also holds a position on the Executive Committee of the Society for the Study of Culture and Psychiatry (SSPC).
