Dr. Pichichero is a physician-scientist. He received his M.D. from the University of Rochester. He completed pediatrics residency and 2 fellowships leading to board certification in three specialties—pediatrics, allergy/immunology and infectious disease. He maintained a large clinical practice in general pediatrics and simultaneously had a private consultation practice in allergy, immunology and infectious diseases for more than 30 years, until 2017 in Rochester.
He has been the principal investigator of over 160 research grants from NIH, CDC, Foundations, vaccine, pharmaceutical and medical device/technology companies. He is primary inventor of 4 patents.
He has authored over 560 publications.
Among his past research accomplishments he is known for his role as one of 4 members of the discovery team at University of Rochester that developed the Haemophilus influenzae b (Hib) conjugate vaccine that has prevented >10 million Hib infections in children worldwide, according to WHO; and in development of a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine that was acquired by industry, now Prevnar.
